Botox

Botox injections can reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles - and improve your self-confidence.

Botox is commonly used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles in the areas surrounding the eyes, forehead and mouth. Though it is a purified neurotoxin, it is a safe and effective treatment that can last from three to six months.

Note that botox is not recommended for patients with an active infection; any history of multiple sclerosis or any other neurological disorder; taking certain antibiotics; or who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to be pregnant in the next three to six months.

What is Botox?

Botox is a toxin that is produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Although injecting a toxin into your face might sound a little risky, the toxin is purified and extremely safe. Botox works by temporarily relaxing the muscles in your face. When you receive an injection, the impulses that instruct your muscles to contract are blocked, which helps smooth out wrinkles in the skin above the muscles.

How Do Dermatologists Use Botox?

    • Wrinkles around your mouth
    • Vertical lines that look like the number “11” between your eyes
    • Horizontal forehead lines
    • Crow’s feet

Botox is also used to treat a number of medical conditions, such as severe underarm sweating, chronic migraines, overactive bladder, and eyelid spasms.

What Happens During My Botox Appointment?

Your dermatologist will evaluate the condition of your skin, discuss your concerns, and answer any questions you may have about Botox.

Once treatment areas have been identified, she will inject Botox into the facial muscles. In just a few minutes, you’ll be free to carry on with the rest of your day. It usually takes a little time to notice the full effect of treatment, but in a week to 10 days, the treated areas will begin to look smoother.

Is Botox a Long-Lasting Treatment?

Unfortunately, it is not – but it might last longer than you think. In general, Botox lasts three to four months, though it may last shorter or longer in some patients. The first time you receive a Botox treatment, it may not last as long but it may last longer after subsequent treatments.
